Exploring protein structures

An interactive molecular viewer, connected to an interest in how AI can help us study biological systems.

Download structure (PDB)

Drag to rotate; scroll or pinch to zoom. Crambin, PDB 1CRN, is an experimental structure, not a prediction made by this site.

Why this interests me

Protein structure sits at the intersection of mathematics, software and biological systems. I'm interested in how AI tools can help people inspect complex scientific information and ask better questions about it.

What you can try

The viewer above loads the site's bundled crambin structure, PDB 1CRN. Rotate the molecule, switch between cartoon and atom representations, or download the original structure. NGL provides the molecular rendering; the page integrates the viewer and interaction controls.

This is a scientific visualization demonstration. It does not predict clinical outcomes, validate a treatment or establish experimental research results.

Engineering questions

  • How should an interface distinguish an experimentally determined structure from a model prediction?
  • How do provenance, confidence and failure states reach the person interpreting a visualization?
  • How can an exploratory tool remain useful when a remote prediction service is unavailable?

Related interests

Robotics and world models are other areas I'm following: how models represent physical systems and how software connects to the world.
